Food!
Today I just want to talk about the food provided by the dorms, and in a later post I'll talk about some of the best dorm microwavable and snack foods.
Here at WVU we have cafeterias at several but not all of the dorms. With a meal plan you can go to any of the cafeterias and eat an all you can eat buffet. The everyday there is salad bar, several cereals, a sandwich station, and pizza. In addition to those there are entrées such as turkey, beef roast, hamburgers, chicken patties, mashed potatoes, and a variety of other foods. You might think all this sounds great but sadly, it's not. The food is often of very cheap quality so the beef is rubbery, the pizza is awful, and you can really tell they use inexpensive ingredients. Because of this I often avoid the cafeteria and go to the other option we have, the Grab N Go.
The Grab N Go has a different hot sandwich every day, a variety of chips, and many side options. The sandwiches are usually pretty good (except for Tuesday's Caprese sub) and the sides aren't bad either. I usually get the hot sub of the day, Cheetos, and cheese cubes or a Smucker's Uncrustable.
From what I've heard, other colleges and universities food snit much better. Universities like to get a lot of money out of students meal plans so they stick to cheap foods. I recommend not getting a meal plan if possible and just going grocery shopping every week or two. Sometime in the future Ill write about my favorite foods are for keeping in the dorm and snacking on. Thanks for reading!
If you want to check out whats on our cafeteria menu check out this link.
Don't you have like a kitchen or whatever in every dorm? That's what universities are like over here.
ReplyDelete@Markbrah Yeah the kitchen/cafeterias are in the basement of most dorms. Not all of our dorms have them though
ReplyDeleteone word for ya bro, RRRRRRRRAMEN!
ReplyDeleteSounds like prison food
ReplyDeletesounds good to me really. I'll have to cook myself when I go to college. I'm too lazy for that. maybe once or twice a week is ok but everyday..just no.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh awesome post man!!!!
ReplyDeleteThankfully I never lived in a dorm, but the food we had at my school was actually pretty good. The food court was moderately cheap and had legitimate restaurants.
ReplyDeleteschool food in general has never really appealed to me, i tend to stay away from it
ReplyDeleteIma get so fat next year
ReplyDeleteWhen I went away my first year of college, I didn't get fatter, but I got more unhealthy. I was downing the bbq chicken pizza like it was nobody's biznis!
ReplyDeletecollege lol

ReplyDeletelast year of high school..not sure if im keen for college
ReplyDeletenever been in a school cafeteria with good food, that's a myth imo!
ReplyDeletesounds awesome actually, schools aint that way here tho
ReplyDeletewell, just cook yourself. It's cheaper and healthier..
ReplyDeleteDude I was gonna go to WVU, went to Mizzou instead.
ReplyDeleteGo out to eat :P
ReplyDeleteI thankfully was never forced to use the meal plan in college.
ReplyDeleteat first i was like damn! this kid has the life over there. really nice variation of foods but liek you said the quality ruins everything. even if you thinnk you are eating healthy all those perservatives and process meats kill the flavor and quality of even the best food
ReplyDeleteDon't gain the freshman 40... pounds that is.
ReplyDeletewhat are the prices like?
ReplyDeletecool blog now following.
ReplyDelete@THEFROG I did the math and it comes out to like 7.50 or 8 bucks per meal. It's a complete rip off.
ReplyDelete@Hombre lol I wont I workout pretty frequently
I spent so much money on meal plans at ucla..criminal
ReplyDeleteWhen I went to Ohio University that was exactly how our dining halls were. I lived off of grab n go everyday
ReplyDeleteTSTC Waco has a cafeteria in the Student Services Center, but not the dorms. The food is surprisingly really good, but they charge a la carte. Its run by the Culinary Arts students and has specialty dishes in one of the hot lines from time to time.
ReplyDeleteI'll be going to college soon so I'll write a post when I can in response.
ReplyDeleteWow, we don't even have cafeterias in our dorms here.
ReplyDeleteId make my own food if I was at uni..
ReplyDeleteI love the food they have in the dining halls here.
ReplyDeleteCollege dinning halls are always so expensive if you break it down, mine averages to about $7/meal.
ReplyDeleteI would make my mommy send my homemade lunch boxes :d
ReplyDeleteOne word: Ramen.
ReplyDeleteAdded you to my morning coffee, thanks.(:
Man, I bet all of this food, despite being delicious, is really expensive. I spent 8 dollars on a sandwich and some chips at my uni. *sigh**
ReplyDeleteI really like cafeteria food.
ReplyDeleteGreat write up for the frugal eater.
